On this day health food enthusiast and entrepreneur Jerome Rodale, 72, tapes an appearance on The Dick Cavett Show. Fresh off a New York Times magazine cover story calling him the “guru of the organic food cult,” the organic gardening proponent and publisher boasts he’ll “live to 100 unless I’m run down by some sugar-crazed taxi driver.” After his interview, as Cavett talks politics with journalist Pete Hamill, he appears to nod off. “Are we boring you?” quips the host. But Rodale isn’t asleep. He’s dead, killed by a heart attack. The show never airs.
